There are two gifts we give our children, one is Roots, and the other is Wings… Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. As parents, this has always been such an important message to instill in our children. Roots always remind us to stay grounded. As a mother, or father, it reminds us of the significance of building a good foundation in our young. Instilling in them the confidence to take flight, while knowing they can always come home. We encourage them to scale to great heights, to spread their wings - what a gift.
I am reminded of a poem that Jake, our middle child and eldest son sent me, called Good Timber by Douglas Malloch the day before he died Dec 15th, 2013. I received the poem via email and in the melee of learning of his death Sunday, I didn't see it until the following day. The four stanza poem is a metaphor which describes the way that trees, of good timber, and strong men are formed through hardship and struggle.
In Jake's subject line he told me "this poem is awesome mom".
Good timber does not grow with ease, the stronger wind, the stronger trees, the further sky, the greater length, the more the storm, the more the strength. By sun and cold, by rain and snow, in trees and men good timber grow. Jake got it. He had a depth of understanding and spirit that not many other young men his age possessed. A sensitivity that caused him pain in his youth, but great empathy in his teenage years, his insight about other people's suffering and his plans for his future dumbfounded our family. Jake was taken from us far too soon, and there are far too many unanswered questions around his death, that at times, I am sure Jake sent that poem to US as a gift. As I reflect on our journey, WE are the Good Timber weathering the storm "holding counsel with the stars. Whose broken branches show the scars Of many winds and much of strife. This is the common law of life".
For this reason - Good Timber, LLC is the company name under which my authorship is being penned - surviving and thriving despite the struggle.
Your insight and encouragement are welcome as we continue to inch towards publishing our Memoir and sharing the true crime journey we've reluctantly been part of for 8 years.
We will strive to answer the questions that we can and appreciate any advice along the way. We've run into SO many roadblocks on our path to seeking Justice, many of our own go unanswered - but we are also convinced someone knows something.

Mission Statement: Truth will not be moved or intimidated by those who seek to silence it - Dr Bennet Omalu. We are here to tell the story only we can tell. Jake's story has the power to change lives. We wish to revel in our memories & light that was our son, to expose the forces working against us from the outset; to serve as a warning to others, don't blindly trust those in authority, don't assume they care, & want the same Justice You Do. We hope to ultimately change laws, a corrupt system, help other families weep, find answers, heal, and celebrate their loved ones.
